SafeTalk is a half-day, suicide-alertness training program designed to teach participants how to prevent suicide by recognizing and responding to people with thoughts of suicide. Developed by LivingWorks Education, the workshop helps participants move past common tendencies to miss, dismiss, or avoid suicide and instead connect individuals with help. The training teaches the TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe.

Learning Objectives:

  • Notice when someone may be having thoughts of suicide.
  • Recognize that many people with suicidal thoughts do not want to die but are seeking relief from pain, and that they often send “invitations” for help.
  • Engage in a direct, open, and compassionate conversation about suicide.
  • Apply the “TALK” steps: Tell–Ask–Listen–KeepSafe.
  • Connect the person to further resources or professionals who are trained to do intervention work.
