Utilizing Sandtray in Therapy: Introduction

There is a plethora of orientations and approaches to psychotherapy that are evidence-based and effective in facilitating change. Talk-therapy is very common among these approaches, and is sometimes insufficient in achieving or facilitating the client’s desired change and growth. This course provides an overview of sandtray interventions and their utility in therapy across populations and settings.

Time is spent reviewing sandtray set-up, various applications, and practical professional nuances. Additional detail is offered on how this, sometimes non-verbal or pre-verbal, experiential approach operates on conscious and unconscious levels to promote change.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Summarize the evidence supporting play therapy and sandtray interventions.
  2. Explain non-directive and directive approaches to play therapy and sandtray interventions.
  3. Identify what interventions may be most effective with children, adolescents, adults, and other specific populations.
  4. Describe core components needed for a sandtray intervention in therapy.
